We are pleased to see that the Indian and Chinese Restaurants throughout the UK seem to be surviving the recession well. They are viewed as good value for money. At the moment every pound you spend on products is important and you should be able to rely on product labels to make your purchasing decisions.
Unfortunately this is not the case with regard to frozen chicken fillets. There is no legal requirement to state on the label the amount of added water going into your chicken. Restaurants buying an 80% meat content chicken product may naturally assume this means there is 20% added water. This may not be the case as anywhere up to 35% or 40% water may be present.
In our experience the cheaper a product the more water has been added. We have told the Food Standards Agency that the labelling regulations need to be changed so that the amount of added water is clearly labelled. So you can be sure you are getting what you pay for.
If you share our view why don't you email the Food Standards Agency at 'labelling@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk' and give them your opinion.
